Plants at the Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam

First opened in the early 1600s, the Hortus Botanicus is a stunning green oasis in the centre of Amsterdam. It is open every day from 10.00 – 17.00 and houses an array of different tropical flowers and plants.

Accessibility

  • Free admission for wheelchair chaperone

  • Wheelchair available for visitors to borrow

  • Mobility scooters allowed

  • Close to public transportation (9 min)

  • Two wheelchair-friendly parking spaces at Plantage Parklaan 9A

  • Some walkways in greenhouses are only accessible via a staircase

  • The butterfly conservatory is not accessible. The doorway is narrow and plastic curtains pose an obstacle.

  • The mirror in the accessible toilet is too high for seated wheelchair users

  • Sliding doors between greenhouse enclosures are extremely heavy

  • Gravel and narrow pathways are challenging to navigate in a mobility scooter

  • The ground in the doorways is not always smooth. This may be a challenge for wheelchair users to navigate independently
