Discovering the Invisible: A Guide to Artis-Micropia’s Accessibility

Have you ever wondered about the tiny world that exists right under our noses—or even on our own skin? In the heart of Amsterdam’s Plantage district, there is a place like no other in the world: Artis-Micropia.

Opened in 2014, Micropia is the first museum dedicated entirely to microbes. While we often think of bacteria and viruses in a negative light, this museum shines a positive spotlight on the essential role these invisible organisms play in our lives. At Able Amsterdam, we’ve visited to see how easy it is to explore this "micro-world" from a wheelchair. Spoiler alert: it’s a fantastic, barrier-free experience!

What to Expect

Micropia is a paradise for lovers of science and microbiology. Using advanced visualization technologies and interactive displays, the museum makes the invisible visible. It’s located within the ARTIS royal zoo complex, making it a perfect addition to a day out in the Plantage neighborhood.

Accessibility at a Glance

We know that planning a visit requires knowing the logistics. Here is everything you need to know about Micropia's accessibility:

  • Entrance: The museum features automated doors, making it easy to enter independently.

  • Moving Around: The entire museum is accessible to wheelchair users. It is modern, spacious, and equipped with elevators to reach all floors.

  • Toilets: Accessible toilets are located on the second floor and are easily reached by the elevator.

  • Parking: For those arriving by car, there are 5 dedicated parking spaces for people with disabilities in the ARTIS parking lot, plus two additional spaces on the street (Plantage Kerklaan).

  • Guide Dogs: Assistance and guide dogs are warmly welcomed.

  • Wheelchair Rental: If you need a wheelchair during your visit, ARTIS offers rentals at the box office for a small deposit. Note that these cannot be reserved in advance, so it’s best to arrive early.
